 11 Commitments for Coaches 

Question: Do I allow students to act poorly? 

Solution: Set up a plan to change their behavior during competition. 

Choices: Set up boundaries to direct them in the correct direction.
(post them up where student-athletes can see them


1. Win or Lose “You are a Winner”. 

2. Make choices to recognize how I can improve my skills. 

3. Make choices to improvise my responses amid competition. 

4. Make choices to give and not take, resulting in poor sportsmanship. 

5. Always be kind. 

6. Make choices to build each other as teammates up (never tear down). 

7. Prepare yourself for the correct attitude (because mistakes will always be made). 

8. Be obedient to your coach (right or wrong). 

9. Look forward to having fun (regardless of the results). 

10. No room for words that tear down (post-positive words). 

11. You make the real difference. 

 
What Happens When You Lose? 

What do you see happen?  Who allows you to… 

1. Throw fits of rage 

2. Pound the floor & break equipment 

3. Curse 

4. Yell at your teammates 

5. Negativity 

6. Display anger & taunting 

 The Coach + Parents + All school staff are watching 

Set up guidelines to form behaviors that the school Principal, Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, and all staff sign off on. The agenda or mission statement will also include discipline, and all will be accountable for the results. Your words are powerful.

Ron is a referee in volleyball, softball, and basketball
with 42 years of experience
in the Northwest. In 1971, Ron was an all-American in high school water polo, also, honored with "Referee of the Century" designation in volleyball in Spokane. He has officiated for 29 years as a Hoopfest referee. Ron is an active Christian involved in his local church and men's ministry. He has three children and eleven wonderful grandchildren.
